Lithium-ion battery available for Robinson R44
Robinson Helicopter Company recently added the TB17 lithium-ion battery to the R44 options.
The TB17 from True Blue Power, a division of Mid-Continent Instrument, offers significant weight savings, improved starter performance, and longer life.
At 16 pounds (7.2 kg), the TB17 is significantly lighter than the standard 29.5-pound (13.4 kg) R44 battery, reducing the overall weight of the helicopter by 13.5 pounds (6.1 kg).
Lithium-ion chemistry provides higher voltage than lead-acid batteries, providing improved starter performance. The internal heater in the lithium-ion battery provides optimum performance in temperatures as low as -40°C (-40°F). Typical battery life is 8 years with minimal maintenance required (visual inspection and capacity check) every 2 years.
The TB17 battery has undergone rigorous manufacturer and FAA testing to ensure safety. An indicator light on the instrument console alerts the pilot if a battery fault is detected. In the event of a fault, the battery automatically shuts down. Built-in circuitry prevents overcharging and/or overheating, and the advanced TB17 nanophosphate chemistry is much less susceptible to thermal runaway than many other lithium-ion batteries.
The battery is currently available in new ships for $7,300 USD
