Can the oil in an aircraft piston engine be refilled with another brand of oil?

Very often pilots ask us if they can use another brand of oil, e.g. for top-ups.

All oils for piston aircraft engines are compatible and meet strictly defined standards. Regardless of whether they are mineral, synthetic or multigrade oils, all aviation oils are compatible and can be mixed without harming the engine.

For example, if Total Aero brand oil was used during the service of a Robinson helicopter when changing the oil in the Lycoming engine, we can definitely use another aviation oil, e.g. Aeroshell brand, during operation.

Most pilots prefer a specific brand, but they are not always able to defend their choice with logic.
Usually, the decision is influenced only by the brand recognition of the oil, and it does not necessarily differ much from its competitors.

To sum up, all oils meet SAE aviation specifications and all have been approved by aircraft engine manufacturers, so oil of another brand can undoubtedly be used.
